The 2017 Bamfield Tuna Shootout will begin at 6:00 am (PST) on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  Any fish caught before this time are not eligible for weigh-in.

The 2017 Bamfield Tuna Shootout will conclude at 4:00 pm (PST) on Saturday, September 16, 2017. All parties must be checked-in at Mills Landing at this time in order for their final weigh-in to be eligible. Check-in stations will remain open until all parties have had the opportunity to complete their final weigh-in.

Main Derby

Prizes

The following prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the 2017 Bamfield Tuna Shootout:

  • 4-Fish Albacore Tuna Aggregate (5 prizes; values TBD)
  • Largest Single Albacore Tuna (1 prize; value TBD)
  • Daily Hidden Weight (1 prize/day; values TBD)
  • Most Helpful Captain as voted by 2017 Bamfield Tuna Shootout participants (1 prize; value TBD)

All prizes will be awarded to the vessels, not individual fishermen. It is the responsibility of each vessel’s captain to allocate prize earnings.

Rules

The following rules apply to the Main Derby:

  1. All captains must sign-in in person prior to each team’s first day of fishing.
    1. All captains present at the Captains’ Meeting will sign-in there.
    2. All other captains must report to Mills Landing to complete their sign-in.
  2. All derby participants must have a valid tidal waters fishing licence.
  3. All captains must check out via text message prior to leaving their port on all fishing days with POB, planned fishing area and estimated time of return.
  4. A predetermined derby VHF channel will be released during the derby. All vessels are required to monitor it and channel 16 (Coast Guard) for safety purposes at all times.
  5. Fishing in American waters is strictly prohibited.
  6. Each team may weigh-in up to 4 fish per day.
    1. Trading of fish between vessels is strictly prohibited.
  7. All vessels must return directly to Bamfield to be eligible for weigh-in.
    1. Any fish caught on a trip that does not terminate in Bamfield are disqualified from weigh-in.
    2. Overnight fishers will only be eligible for one hidden weight prize per trip.
  8. All vessels not returning to Mills Landing and not weighing in must check-in via text message when they arrive at their port of destination.
  9. All fish being weighed will be inspected by a Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) biologist and are property of The Bamfield Tuna Shootout until released.
    1. Fish with a missing starboard longfin will be disqualified.
    2. Fish not properly bled and iced will be disqualified (see catch handling recommendations).
    3. Fish that are determined to be frozen or previously frozen by the biologist will be disqualified.
  10. If weather conditions are determined dangerous by the Bamfield Tuna Shootout Advisory Board, all boats will be asked to abort offshore runs and weigh-ins will be closed.
  11. Weigh-in will close at 9:00 pm (PST) on every day of the tournament, with the exception of the final day (September 16, 2017) when weigh-in will close at 4:00 pm (PST).
  12. Any disputes will be subject to mediation by the Bamfield Tuna Shootout Advisory Board.

Side Pots

Prizes

Daily side pots will be posted at 6:30 am (PST) each morning at Mills Landing. All derbies commence at 7:00 am (PST).

Side pots may include largest halibut; largest Chinook salmon; largest Coho salmon; hidden weight any species; and more.

  1. Each side pot requires $50 per entry. Only one entry is permitted from each team each day.
  2. Each side pot will have one winner.
  3. All captains must sign up for side pot derbies in person at Mills Landing between 6:30 am (PST) and 7:00 am (PST).
  4. All derby participants must have a valid tidal waters fishing licence
  5. Fishing in American waters is strictly prohibited.
  6. All vessels must return directly to Bamfield to be eligible for weigh-in.
    1. Any fish caught on a trip that does not terminate in Bamfield are disqualified from weigh-in.
